When we bought this land in 2015, it hadn’t been farmed in over 40 years. With its unique characteristics, this land doesn’t suit well to modern agriculture. It consists of 92 acres, most of which is forest, with a mix of both hard and softwood. A large wetland occupies the very back. There is a large ridge that runs on either side of our property and provides amazing views of the surrounding landscape. Existing fields and pastures could vaguely be identified by old fences that ceased to stand. Eastern red cedars grew so thick in the old fields, it made it difficult to walk through. It was only after we had moved that we found a small pond in the back, and an old barn foundation hidden among sumac. Old rusty farm implements, still can be found buried under debris. Apple trees line either side of our driveway and are planted along trails on the property. Wild apple trees still dot the pastures. They provide welcome shade for our cows and horse from the hot summer sun, as well as tasty treats in the fall. Pear trees are planted along our farm lane, which allows access to the back fields and woods. The pears themselves are small, round and hard, until a frost softens them. In spring, the trees are ablaze with color and sounds, as local pollinating species, search for food within the blossoms. In autumn, the fallen pears make a rich sweet aroma. Hazelnuts, bittersweet vines, wild roses, and lilacs are just a few other features this land offers.

This photo was taken of our land back in 1971 by Laszlo (Leslie) Lorincz, a previous owner of our farm. He took the photo of his wife Teresa and their young son Steve. It overlooks the back of the house and road from atop the ridge. Steve Lorincz stopped in one day and was generous enough to share pictures and stories of his youth living here. Notice the small wild flower bouquet in Mrs. Lorincz’s hand.
